GMS Course - Advanced Groundwater Modeling and Visualization with GMS - Short Course
A Hands-On, Case Study Oriented, Course Featuring Advanced Topics in Site Characterization, Modeling Complex Stratigraphy, GIS
Integration, Transient Simulations, and Model Calibration. Case Studies will include MODFLOW and FEMWATER simulations, and an introduction to the new PEST, UCODE, UTCHEM and NUFT interfaces.

GMS Course Description
The course is intended to provide existing GMS users with additional techniques and skills that cannot be adequately addressed in an introductory
GMS course. The course will focus on a case study using extensive data collected by Dr. Norm Jones for the Woburn, Massachusetts site featured in the recent book and movie: A Civil Action. Attendees will learn
advanced site characterization using the Borehole, TIN, and Solids modules. New tools for handling complex stratigraphy will be featured. Using the same case study, users will then be given comprehensive instruction
for conceptual modeling, including utilizing GIS data. Advanced tools for importing and managing data for transient simulations will also be discussed. The same data and conceptual model used for the MODFLOW case
study will then be used to generate a FEMWATER simulation, including a discussion of advanced 3D finite element mesh generation techniques. Other FEMWATER case studies will also be presented featuring Army Corps of
Engineers projects. The course will conclude with an extensive coverage of model calibration, including instruction in using the new interfaces for the PEST and UCODE parameter estimation models. The Woburn case
study will be used throughout the course. Optional sessions will include a discussion of advanced geostatistics (zonal kriging, indicator simulations), and demos of the new UTCHEM and NUFT interfaces which will soon
be available in GMS.

- How to set up a FEMWATER mesh
- Running a FEMWATER simulation

Cary A. Talbot. MS, Brigham Young University, 1994. Research Hydraulic Engineer, US Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) in Vicksburg, MS. Software manager for the US Army Groundwater Modeling Technical Support Center. Extensive experience using GMS for Corps of Engineers projects, particularly for FEMWATER applications. Co-author of FEMWATER reference manual.

GMS Course Cost
The cost of the 4-day course is $1,295 for registration made 30 days before the course, and $1,395 for registration thereafter. Registration
includes the following:
- Instruction and hands on use of GMS with a personal computer
- Course notes
- Software CD containing GMS software (demo), tutorials, and documentation
Note: A 25% discount (limited to $500) is available for any new GMS software purchase for all course attendees. This discount is available if registration payment is submitted with the software order, or can be used up to 60 days following the course. This includes upgrades to GMS v3.1.
GMS Course Location
The short course will be held in scenic Park City, Utah, a former mining town that has evolved into a world famous year-round resort. Park City is
situated in a small, picturesque valley high in the Wasatch mountains. It is home to the U.S. Ski Team and host to many events of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Countless restaurants, shops and art galleries are within
walking distance of the short course facilities.
Park City is a year-round resort town and there are plenty of fun things to do. To get a sampling, you may wish to spend some time browsing the Park City On Line or Park City USA sites.
GMS Course Accommodations
The GMS training course will be held at the Shadow Ridge Hotel
in Park City. The Shadow Ridge features deluxe double queen hotel rooms, indoor jacuzzi and sauna, a heated pool, and fitness center. A block of rooms has been reserved for the GMS training course attendees at a greatly reduced off-season rate of $72/night. To receive this rate, you must fill out a special registration form. GMS Course Transportation
If you are traveling from out of state, you should fly in to the Salt Lake City International Airport. Park City is only 45 minutes (30
