GMS 4.0 Download GMS 4.0 GMS 4.0 Detailed New Features
Ground Water Modeling System
We are excited to announce the release of GMS version 4.0. This version of GMS has been in development for a long time
and it represents a major upgrade from version 3.1. This version includes an interface to the new MODFLOW 2000 model, new site characterization tools, enhanced parameter estimation options, and a powerful
suite of stochastic modeling tools. This version also has a new look to the interface, including spreadsheet controls, a tree control for exploring project data, and improved plots.

Updated Models
Updated versions of the following models (or model interfaces) supported by GMS are included with GMS v4.0:

MT3DMS/RT3D

New versions of these transport codes are supported. The changes in the new versions are
primarily to ensure MODFLOW 2000 compatibility.

MODPATH

MODPATH v4.0 is supported in GMS v4.0. The changes to this version are primarily related to
MODFLOW 2000 support. This new version of MODPATH is incorporated in the new fully-automated particle tracking interface.

FEMWATER

GMS v4.0 supports the latest version of FEMWATER (version 3.0). This version includes several
new enhancements, most of which are aimed at improving model stability. These enhancements include dynamic (run-time) acceleration parameter adjustment and spline smoothing of
unsaturated zone curves. This new version of FEMWATER is considerably more stable and faster than previous versions.

UTCHEM

The UTCHEM interface now supports the biodegradation and tracer options. The tracer options
can be used to simulate partitioning interwell tracer test

SEAM3D
The SEAM3D interface in GMS v4.0 includes support for two new packages: the Dechlorination
Package and the Cometabolism Package.

Spreadsheet Controls

Part of the "new look" in GMS v4.0 is due to a new spreadsheet controlled that has been utilized throughout the GMS interface. Unlike the old GMS spreadsheet controls, the new controls are
fully windows compatible. This makes it possible to cut, paste, or delete multiple cells at once. An entire spreadsheet can be copied from GMS to an external application or vice versa. For
example, most of the columns in the observation well data shown below can be copied directly into GMS from an Excel spreadsheet.

Database Import Wizard
GMS v4.0 supports a new utility called the Database Import Wizard for importing borehole, scatter
point, and observation point data from any external database. The Wizard is launched using the Import Database command in the File menu. The wizard uses the ODBC drivers included as part
of the Windows OS to link to any Oracle or Access database. In the first step of the Wizard, the user links to an external database. In the next step, the user enters an SQL query to extract the
desired records from the database. Frequently used queries can be saved for future use.
New Particle Tracking Options

The interface to the USGS MODPATH particle tracking code has been completely overhauled in
GMS v4.0. The result is a powerful suite of particle tracking and capture zone delineation tools that are extremely easy to use. In previous version of GMS, a MODPATH simulation was
performed by entering the input data, saving the simulation files, launching the simulation, and read in the results for post-processing. With GMS v4.0, pathlines are now generated automatically
and instantly whenever a set of particles (starting locations) is created. As a result, pathlines are now a simple display option, much like contours or vectors. Once a set of particles is created,
reading in a new MODFLOW solution, or switching to a different solution in the Data Tree causes the pathlines to be automatically updated to match the new flow field.

Risk Analysis Wizard
The Risk Analysis Wizard is generally used in conjunction with the new stochastic modeling tools
in GMS v4.0. When a stochastic solution is read into GMS, the solutions associated with the individual runs are placed in the GMS Data Tree in a separate folder. When the user right clicks
on this folder, one of the options in the resulting pop-up menu is "Risk Analysis Wizard". Clicking
on this option launches the Risk Analysis Wizard. The first step in the wizard is to select the type of analysis. Two types are currently supported: probabilistic threshold analysis and probabilistic
capture zone delineation.

Probabilistic Threshold Analysis
The probabilistic threshold analysis option is designed primarily for use with results from transport
simulations. With this option, the user is allowed to enter a set of rules based on whether the value of a particular data set is less than, equal to, or greater than some threshold value. For
example, the user could set a rule representing TCE concentration less than some level stipulated by a regulatory agency. Multiple rules can be created if desired.
Additional Features
In addition to the main features described in the links shown in the menu on the left, the following new features have been added to GMS v4.0:
- Simplified File I/0
- Observation Point to Scatter Point Conversion
- New Observation Point Dialog
- New Interpolation Options
- Enhanced DXF Options
- Automatic Elevation Mapping
- Display/View Menus Merged
